Check out your wood pile as part of your home maintenence

While not typically considered to be a home maintenance job, checking out your wood pile is crucial if you use wood for heat. By now your wood should already have been gathered and stacked and be well on its way to being dry for the fall. If not, then its time to get down to work.
Your first priority is sourcing your wood. If you always find yourself scrambling, take some time now to contact some tree pruners and landscape gardening businesses. They will have lots of trees to get rid of and you may be able to arrange to have them dump them at your home. It will save them landfill fees and so many businesses are happy to do this.
Next, look over your wood shed. It should be large enough to store your regular supply of winter wood. Fix any leaks, and, if it is free standing, make sure the supports are secure.
Having a water proof wood storage and your wood already drying should have you well prepared for a cold wet winter.
